Muting is a technique that will enhance your playing and works better in some songs than others. In Spoonful there are are short gaps (in music we call them rests) that are an important part of the song and you need to mute the strings to get them.

In the beginners slide course Spoonful is a great song to learn early because it only has the two notes and so I've included it but don't worry too much about muting. If you want to add some by all means give it a shot, you'll use your left hand to stop the open string vibrating.

thanks for reply im on the three string fretted course.im ok with the rythem pattern i dont want to get bogged down on it...

thats a good idea. There'll be plenty of time to learn these more advanced techniques and you can always come back to it.
