Outcomes

By the end of this lesson you'll have

  • found a comfortable position for your hand and arm
  • learned how to hold the pick
  • learned how to use your pick to play a series of notes in time

This first video looks at the essentials of where to put your hand, how to hold your pick and how to use it to play in time. The notes are here.

This one gets you started at the fretboard where again the main consideration is your hand position. It'll take some time to get right and doesn't need to be perfect now but by being confident in playing one note accurately and efficiently like this you'll have made a great start. The notes are here.

Your first song is Willie Dixon's Spoonful. You can play the whole thing with one fretted note and the open string, your focus should be on playing the notes cleanly with your left hand and playing in time with your right. Notice that most notes are on the downbeat but not all, some are longer than others in duration and there are a few sections with no playing at all, keep counting through them. The tab is here.
